Arid Land Hybrid Crop-Seed Increase Project

Eco-Sol strives to find and develop new crops with energy potential. We have currently begun seed increase operations at 2 sites in Southern Arizona on an arid land plant that has tremendous potential as an energy crop for biodiesel as well as for ethanol and other fuel alcohols.

dscn0279.JPGThis plant was developed as a food crop over almost 20 years of selective breeding at the University of Arizona. A hybrid version, optimized for starch and oilseed production, was the result of this work. Unfortunately, the processing required to make this plant into food grade starches, oil and protein, was deemed uneconomical and funding for the program was stopped. As an energy crop, a low water desert plant that produces both starches for ethanol or butanol production, as well as oil for biodiesel feedstock is ideal. We have located one of the primary researchers on the earlier food crop work, and have revived the project as an energy crop. We have planted this season, in order to increase seed quantities for commercial plantings in the near future.
